Archaeological excavations in the Areni-1 cave complex in southeastern Armenia revealed installations and artifacts dating to around 4000 cal. BCE that are strongly indicative of wine production. Chemical evidence for this hypothesis is presented here using a new method to detect the anthocyanin malvidin that gives grapes and pomegranates their red color. Using solid phase extraction (SPE) and ...
متن کاملBCE: Berkeley’s Common Scientific Compute Environment for Research and Education
There are numerous barriers to the use of scientific computing toolsets. These barriers are becoming more apparent as we increasingly see mixing of different academic backgrounds, and compute ranging from laptops to cloud platforms. Members of the UC Berkeley D-Lab, Statistical Computing Facility (SCF), and Berkeley Research Computing (BRC) support such usecases, and have developed strategies t...
متن کاملGenerative Historical Model of City Size Hierarchies: 430 BCE – 2005∗
Despite the enormous changes in city size and differentiation of functions over time and space, and discontinuities in growth processes, key spatio-temporal and distributional processes shaping city sizes are often assumed to remain invariant. We demonstrate in this article that most of the facile assumptions about such invariance, that is, constancy over long historical periods, are unsupporte...
